Sgraffito

Description
Students of all levels will learn this versatile surface decorating technique of carving through a slip to expose a contrasting clay body. We will cover how to make coloured slips, apply them to your work and carve through them using a variety of tools at the right stage to get beautiful and fun designs. We’ll also show you how to add wax, underglaze and washes to get striking effects. What to bring: If you have them, bring your carving and sgraffito tools, such as needle tools, small ball styluses, and X-Acto knives. Also, if you have them, bring a variety of paint brushes, such as 1 or 1 ½” soft-bristle paint brushes (like from Rona), fan brushes, hake brushes, mop brushes, and brushes used for painting designs. If you want to work on your own pieces, bring 2-3 trimmed leather hard pieces made of a smooth clay with NO GROG or paper fibres. Handles, if desired, should be attached before the session. Anything else: Practice tiles, slips and a variety of tools will be available for your use.
