Description

Introducing the colourful world of maiolica! This 5-week class is for all skill levels and explores the historic glazing technique of maiolica. This is done on low-fire clay and is a style of on-glaze painting, suitable for wheel-throwers and hand-builders alike. Students will be experimenting on earthenware tiles at the beginning of this class and working towards 1 final piece, either thrown or hand-built. We will be looking at its historical influence and examples as well as contemporary makers working within maiolica. This technique had its heyday during the Renaissance and focuses largely on narrative; students are encouraged to create and express their own narratives through their pieces and will be trying a variety of surface techniques. It will be helpful for students to come up with ideas for the narratives they wish to explore, though there is time throughout the 5 weeks to continue working on these concepts. What to bring: Apron Any tools you have/wish to use Any of your preferred throwing/handbuilding tools, particularly a pin tool, a rib, and paint brushes in a variety of sizes, especially smaller detail brushes. If you have AMACO brand underglazes, they may be used (AMACO only; other underglaze brands DO NOT work the same). What's included: All glazes, kiln firings, and clay are included in the class fee. Any necessary tools are available at the studio for your use.
