Saggar Firing Workshop
Service Description
Alison Brannen will be sharing her methods of saggar firing in an electric kiln. Participants will learn how to make and apply terra sigillate & prepare pots to be fired in the electric kiln overnight. Depending on the size of the pots you bring, you will have at least 1 - 3 pots fired Day 1 - Saturday, May 24 12:00 - 6:00 pm followed by group potluck AM Demonstration and discussion: How to make and apply colored terra sigillata to student’s bone dry pots. Students to work hands-on to apply sigillata. Set pots aside to dry. (will need banding wheels and wide brushes. Can demonstrate spray compressor) PM Demonstration of creating individual saggars: Students work hands on to roll out recycled clay over tinfoil and apply slips, cobalt carbonate, copper carbonate, iron oxide, course steel wool, copper wire scrubs and table salt. Students wrap their bisque ware pots in the wet clay and tinfoil they have prepared. Load and tumble stack the larger saggar chamber. Evening: Pot Luck After everyone leaves, fire the saggar chamber inthe electric kiln to cone 05. Day 2 - Sunday, May 25 9:30 am - 3:30 pm AM: Open the electric kiln and large Saggar chamber cover to finish cooling. PowerPoint presentation on Alison’s work and process. Unload individual saggar pots, remove and dispose of broken off shard material. Wash and sand pots. Dry and learn how to wax work. Lunch PM: Presentation. Students present their finished pieces and discuss what worked and what could be improved Students are to bring: 6 small pots, of which 3 are bisque fired and 3 are bone dry and very smooth. Pots should ideally be less than 1 lb, and as a maximum 2 lbs. Since there is no glaze being applied, the surface of your pots at bisque/bone remains the surface once fired. We recommend that the pots are very smooth/burnished A mask Wide brushes Nice to have: Rolling pin Banding wheel (if owned) Hot glue gun and glue sticks (if owned) Optionally, you may also wish to bring combustibles such as copper wire scrubbers or other organic materials. Please bring your own snacks, drinks and lunch as well as a dish for the pot luck dinner on Saturday evening at 6.
