Clayworks Studio Manager Job Posting

The Brantford Potters’ Guild was formed in 1975 and incorporated as a nonprofit organization in 1978. Membership has grown over the years to a current level of over 100 members both active and studio.  In September of 2014, ClayWorks Studio was opened in Brantford as a member run studio with year-round classes and workshops for adults and children. The studio is run by the Brantford Potter’s Guild and provides a fully equipped studio space for handbuilders and wheel throwers with a range of experience in clay.  Access to the studio is limited to students and studio members only. Support for the studio is provided by members through mandatory service hours.

Job Description

The ClayWorks Studio Manager provides oversight and management of the overall operations of the ClayWorks Studio for the Brantford Potters’ Guild. The position oversees the daily operations of the studio in collaboration with team leads and an assistant studio manager. The studio manager works with a glaze team lead, kiln team lead, clean team lead, education director and health and safety team lead to ensure the safe and smooth operation of a busy teaching and member studio. They work collaboratively with ceramic instructors and community members to ensure all programs run smoothly and that the goals of the organization are met.

Essential Functions & Basic Duties

The studio manager is expected to lead a team to ensure the studio runs efficiently by:

  • Communicating effectively

  • Leading by example

  • Acting as a mentor and point person through guidance, feedback and problem solving abilities

  • Actively contributing to team growth and performance

  • Train and motivate as needed

  • Ensure safe use of the studio

  • Oversee the studio building space and report any issues to landlord/board

  • Recruit, interview and approve studio membership

  • Report to the board on a quarterly basis or as needed

  • Work within a prescribed budget for the operation of the studio

  • Make necessary purchases of equipment, tools, and materials to ensure the studio is fully equipped

  • Manage resources

Qualifications
  • Technical knowledge of clay process and equipment

  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills

  • Ability to communicate effectively with others verbally and written

  • Ability to maintain a positive studio environment

  • Work independently and in collaboration with others

  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills

Performance Measures

Studio Manager performance will be based on:

  • The ability to communicate in a friendly and understandable manner both verbally, by email and WhatsApp 

  • Maintaining a clean and safe studio environment

  • Demonstrate effective team leadership

  • Provide timely upkeep of inventory and equipment

Required Experience/Knowledge
  • Knowledge of ceramics equipment and processes

  • Experience in glaze making and understanding of glaze ingredients

  • Experience firing and troubleshooting electric kilns

  • Equipment checks

  • Basic bookkeeping

  • Diploma or degree in ceramics considered an asset. (more than 8 classes in ceramics with experience in all aspects of a ceramics studio operations will be considered) 

Other Duties & Requirements

Physical activity required for this position:

  • Ability to carry and move 50lbs

  • Use of vehicle and ability to drive may be required

  • Use of power tools such as a drill, angle grinder, bench grinder etc.

  • The use of a respirator may be required

  • Use of safety glasses may be required

  • Exposure to silica and dry chemicals is expected, and proper health and safety steps are expected to be followed

Wage

This is a contract position and will require monthly invoicing.

20 hours per month from September through June, 5-10 hours per month July and August.

$35 per hour.

Formal review at the end of a 10-month term.
